Well, I totally thought I’d already posted unboxings for both OwlCrate and FairyLoot but apparently not. The theme for OwlCrate April 2021 was Ruthless Rivals and it contained items inspired by Where Dreams Descend, Nevernight, These Violent Delights and Hamilton.
It wasn’t my favourite box I’ve every got, but it did have some pretty cool looking items in.
Check out all the items below.
The Book
Witches Steeped in Gold by Ciannon Smart was April’s book and I’ve heard so much good about it! OwlCrate’s copy has a darker background, is signed by the author and has reverse cover art from @bloodydamnit.
It’s beautiful, but I’m getting a copy in another book box so not entirely sure I’ll keep this one?
The exclusive pin was designed by Icey Designs, it’s cool but wow… so big!
Synopsis
Divided by their order. United by their vengeance.
Iraya has spent her life in a cell, but every day brings her closer to freedom – and vengeance.
Jazmyne is the Queen’s daughter, but unlike her sister before her, she has no intention of dying to strengthen her mother’s power.
Sworn enemies, these two witches enter a precarious alliance to take down a mutual threat. But power is intoxicating, revenge is a bloody pursuit, and nothing is certain – except the lengths they will go to win this game.
This Jamaican-inspired fantasy debut about two enemy witches who must enter into a deadly alliance to take down a common enemy has the twisted cat-and-mouse of Killing Eve with the richly imagined fantasy world of Furyborn and Ember in the Ashes.
Card Game
This is an exclusive card game designed by @paperbackbones… I think it’ll be cute to try out with friends when the world’s back to normal, maybe during a YALC trip or something. Until then, it’ll just be kept safe in the packaging.
Coffee
Kind of wish that the Where Dreams Descend item wasn’t the coffee one, but Jordan said that this cinnamon hazelnut coffee from Fable Grounds Coffee was pretty nice at least! I don’t actually like coffee though.
Phone Wallet
I’m not the biggest fan of Hamilton, but can’t deny that this phone wallet designed by Lady Chubb Letters has gorgeous lettering on it!
Pillow Case
Inspired by Nevernight and designed by KDP Letters, this pillow case just feels so soft and lovely! The design is beautiful too.
Chopstick Set
I think I’ve had a few chopstick sets at this point, but this one designed by @paperbackbones and inspired by These Violent Delights is definitely my favourite! It just looks so fancy.
Overall
Overall this box was pretty good but not my favourite OwlCrate I’ve ever received. I love how the book cover was kept mostly the same as its a gorgeous cover, and the pin is pretty cool even though its so huge! I’m glad Jordan got some use from the box too at least. And I think in non-lockdown life the card game will probably be fun to try out with pals!
Next Month – Expect the Unexpected 🌊
From OwlCrate themselves:
‘Our May book is a futuristic sci-fi thriller about two separated sisters trying to find their way back to one another. This story features so many twists and turns, and we haven’t been able to stop thinking about its stunning conclusion. If you love being surprised by plot twists, unique technology and family bonds, this is the book for you!
We will be including a beautiful exclusive edition of this book, with an exclusive cover and large exclusive foil design on the hardcover case. The book will also be signed and come with a letter from the author!
Items included will be inspired by books with epic twists such as The Illuminae Files, Rule of Wolves, Scythe, The Fifth Season, and The Gilded Wolves!
This box will also contain the next A Darker Shade of Magic inspired book tin in our ongoing collection with artist @forensicsandflowers!’
I’m seriously excited to see this box! I have read the book already, it wasn’t one of my favourites but a lot of others loved it, so I’m excited to see what the OwlCrate copy looks like! (Although the cover is already stunning)
The Illuminae item is probably the one I’m most excited for, but I’m also very much so looking forward to seeing the Rule of Wolves item!
