Guess who was able to resubscribe to OwlCrate for their February box? My last OwlCrate box before this was the January 2020 one and I’m so happy I’m able to get them again!
The theme for February 2021 was Magic Unleashed and contained items inspired by Daughter of Smoke and Bone, Legendborn, We Hunt the Flame, A Darker Shade of Magic and Star Daughter.

The Book
This month’s book was The Gilded Ones by Namina Forna, and this definitely looks interesting to me! The OwlCrate edition features small changes to the cover (which I’m grateful for as it’s already pretty beautiful), exclusive foiling on the hardcover and comes signed with an author letter.
The exclusive pin was designed by Icey Designs, who happens to be the author of We Hunt the Flame which one of the items is based on.
Synopsis
Sixteen-year-old Deka lives in fear and anticipation of the blood ceremony that will determine whether she will become a member of her village. Already different from everyone else because of her unnatural intuition, Deka prays for red blood so she can finally feel like she belongs.
But on the day of the ceremony, her blood runs gold, the color of impurity–and Deka knows she will face a consequence worse than death.
Then a mysterious woman comes to her with a choice: stay in the village and submit to her fate, or leave to fight for the emperor in an army of girls just like her. They are called alaki–near-immortals with rare gifts. And they are the only ones who can stop the empire’s greatest threat.

Book Tin
This book tin is the first in a four-part collectible series inspired by A Darker Shade of Magic, created by Forensics and Flowers. I haven’t read this series yet but the tin is gorgeous! It’s also pretty big which surprised me, the quality is fantastic.
Keychain
I’ll just cut to the chase and say I’ve read none of the books that these items are inspired by… but Daughter of Smoke and Bone is super high on my catch-up list because Strange the Dreamer is one of my all-time favourite duologies! This keychain is probably my favourite item in this month’s box too, it’s just beautiful. Created by Lively Ghosts.
Hairbrush
This hairbrush has a gorgeous design on (from Team OwlCrate themselves) but personally I don’t think I’ll be able to use it – my hair is too fragile after bleaching and dying it too much. Still, another beautiful item!
Zipper Pouch
Inspired by Legendborn, a book I’m seriously hoping to get round to soon, this zipper pouch is just so well-made! It’s aesthetically pleasing design is from By Chenelle and it just feels very high-quality.
Bath Salts
I’m a fan of any item that encourages me to take a bath instead of a shower, so these are a winner with me! These are inspired by We Hunt the Flame and created by The Soap Librarian.
Overall
I definitely feel like I got my money’s worth with this box, the keychain, metal tin and pouch in particular are great items and of course the book and pin are both gorgeous too! The only item I’m not a fan of is the brush but this is purely because I’ve ruined my hair to a point I’m too scared to use anything other than tangle teasers – it’s still a gorgeous design on it though.

Okay I’m pretty excited for this box because witchy boxes are always a winner with me! I’m glad they’re going for a whimsical cottage style too because I have a feeling that the items will be beautiful.
Also very excited for the book, and super happy about sprayed edges!
I think it’s really nice that they’re giving subscribers a heads up about scented items too, definitely something I hope will be standard for all book boxes going forward.
