The theme for FairyLoot’s June 2021 box was Animal Companions and it contained items inspired by The Raven Boys, Crescent City, The Priory of the Orange Tree, Kiki’s Delivery Service and Kingdom of the Wicked.
There were some super cute items in this box, but overall to be honest my absolute favourite item was the book itself!
Check out all the items below.
The Book
This month’s book was Fire With Fire by Destiny Soria, it’s one I read recently and really enjoyed so I was excited for this! Check out my review here if you’d like to see my thoughts on the book.
The FairyLoot edition has an exclusive cover (colour change, it’s a bit more purple which I’ll always be a fan of), sprayed yellow edges, artwork on the reverse of the dust jacket by @icandrawthingz, foil embossing on the case designed by the same artist, is signed by the author and also comes with an author letter featuring character artwork on the reverse by @sallteas.
Honestly, big fan of so much of Nox being included. The best character by far and I just love him so much!
Synopsis
Two sisters. Divided they burn.
Two sisters raised to be fierce dragon slayers end up on opposing sides of an impending war when one forms an unlikely, magical bond with a dragon, in this exciting, fresh contemporary young adult fantasy.
Dani and Eden Rivera were both born to kill dragons, but the sisters couldn’t be more different. For Dani, dragon slaying takes a back seat to normal high school life, while Eden prioritizes training above everything else. Yet they both agree on one thing: it’s kill or be killed where dragons are concerned.
Until Dani comes face-to-face with one and forges a rare and magical bond with him. As she gets to know Nox, she realizes that everything she thought she knew about dragons is wrong. With Dani lost to the dragons, Eden turns to the mysterious and alluring sorcerers to help save her sister. Now on opposite sides of the conflict, the sisters will do whatever it takes to save the other. But the two are playing with magic that is more dangerous than they know, and there is another, more powerful enemy waiting for them both in the shadows.
Flower Pot
Designed by @ouroridae, this flower pot is inspired by Crescent City. It’s pretty cool and I really do like the artwork, but it looks more like a mug without a handle…? It’ll probably be handy for holding things like bookmarks though!
Metal Bookmark
This bookmark is designed by @no0nedesigns and inspired by The Priory of the Orange Tree, it’s just so pretty! Big dragon fan here.
Pillow Cases
Designed by @kdpletters and inspired by The Raven Cycle series, these are such cute cases! I really appreciate how FairyLoot included a pair too, there have been a couple of times in the past where I’ve had a single pillow case in a book box and I’ve just had to deal with mismatched pillows.
Enamel Pin
The Kiki’s Delivery Service item of course had to feature Jiji. It’s a design from @layla_ashtar_shrine and although it’s not in the Ghibli style it’s still pretty cute – it looks to me more like a realistic Jiji! And purple sparkle is always appreciated, of course!
Acrylic Standee
Kingdom of the Wicked item here! This was one of the items I was looking forward to seeing the most and it’s actually my first ever standee too! I’m definitely a fan after this one though and hope we’ll see more of them in the future. This is, naturally, the beautiful Wrath with his animal companion that we’ll be meeting in Kingdom of the Cursed, as drawn by @morgana0anagrom.
Tarot Cards
This month’s tarot cards are again designed by @morgana0anagrom and… well the spoiler card says it’s Serpent & Dove but based off the standee alone it’s got to be Kingdom of the Wicked‘s Wrath and Emilia! Beautiful artwork as always though.
Overall
I definitely liked this box a lot overall, mostly for the book, metalmark and standee if I’m completely honest. As I’ve mentioned, I really do hope we get more standees in the future because they look super cute when on display!
Big fan of the book art too! The adorable Nox print included. And I love how the book is so yellow! Not a colour you see often for books or sprayed edges.
Next Month – Tales Retold 💜
From FairyLoot themselves:
‘We are so excited to reveal the July theme for our monthly box and it is… TALES RETOLD!
There are some stories that can be retold time and time again without ever feeling like it’s the same story. We love finding fresh takes on our favourite tales that surprise us in new and magical ways, which is why we’ve dedicated this entire theme to them!
In this box you can expect items inspired by Spin The Dawn, A Court of Thorns and Roses, The Star-Touched Queen, Cinderella is Dead and Heartless. We are thrilled to reveal that this box will include a stunning booksleeve with artwork by the one and only @rosiethorns88.
Our featured book of the month is a story that we loved and draws from “The Wild Swans” and East Asian folklore. This whimsical tale has a princess in exile, a shapeshifting dragon, six enchanted cranes, and a curse that needs to be broken. The FairyLoot exclusive edition will have an UNIQUE COVER, STENCIL & SPRAYED EDGES, ARTWORK ON THE REVERSE OF THE DUST JACKET by @sallteas, FOIL EMBOSSING ON THE CASE by @sallteas and will be SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR.’
For no reason in particular I am very very excited for this box featuring a story with ‘six enchanted cranes‘… 👀
I’m also, obviously, a huge fan of Spin The Dawn and they’ve mentioned it’s a big item so I’m ridiculously excited for that! Shipping has started and I got my tracking today, I seriously cannot wait to see the items and the book. With a book sleeve designed by @rosiethorns88 and an ACOTAR item… I can’t help but assume that she’s doing the ACOTAR item as a book sleeve! Which, I think will be pretty damn awesome.
If we could speed up these next couple of days, I’d be very happy!
Also I recently picked up a Spin The Dawn art print by @sallteas and it’s just so beautiful, definitely excited to see her illustrations for this book!
(I’m not sorry that I try and mention Elizabeth Lim’s work as much as possible, I’m not. More people need to read her awesome books so I’ll stop when everyone has ^_^)
